With a vast bay window offering impressive views of Roccagloriosa and the barren peaks of central Cilento, U'TRappitu easily rivals the panorama with excellent, tasty home-coking. With a simple menu using only local produce and offering traditional cilentana dishes from the surrounding area. We start with an anti-pasto of warm peppered ricotta, marinated pisciottana olives and pickled aubergines accompanied by thick slices of local prosciutto. We follow with a steaming bowl of hand-rolled egg fusilli with thick lamb stew, fragrant and velvety and ricotta-stuffed cerioli (a kind of round ravioli) in a delicate funghi sauce as we are at the height of the mushroom season. All of this washed down with a half-litre of house red, produced right on our doorstep from the vines at the foot of the hill - warm and rich comes to 13 euros a head! For main courses the restaurant offers seasonal game and local meat grilled on an open fire, or in stews towards the winter period. Beef in these parts is of exceptional quality and there is a more marked consumption of lamb than in the north of italy.
The dining room is warm and welcoming despite its vast size thanks to an open wood oven for firing pizzas, a period coal stove in a corner of the dining area and the large oak olive press beautifully restored and taking pride of place in the banqueting room. It is from the press that the restaurant derives its name, "trappitu" being a local dialectal term for the stone wheels used in grain mills, olive and wine presses.
